What a Horrible Place

The light green grass tickled my legs. Broken shacks lay with harmful memories attached to them. A little patch of grass showed the only life around me. My ragged clothes tell the story of what I have been through. All alone with no Mum or Dad, they just left me here to survive by myself. They only cared about themselves, not me. Because I’m younger I probably mean nothing to them. The scars over my body show all the tough times. The only toy that I have left is this bundle of wool wrapped in rope. My mother made it for me when I was younger. Oh how I miss my mummy, why did she have to go? Dark clouds gradually floated above me, light droplets sprinkled over me. I open my mouth as wide as it can go, for I haven’t had a drink in hours. My tummy cramps are very painful, the need to eat is becoming more prevalent. The day was ending because the suns hot rays were slowly fading away. Small yellow dots twinkle in the sky, the bright powerful moon acts as a night light.

The sound of birds fill my ears, their beautiful chirp and song. Exhausted, my squinting eyes open, the glaring sun beams onto my dark brown skin. Time went by until I suddenly heard the crunching of the stones in the distance. I was terrified of who it could be. Maybe they were coming to save me or maybe not. An army truck pulled up in front of me. Nervously I sat still not moving at all. Out jumped a muscular man with his gun hooked on his back. Another man walked up to me and grabbed me roughly under the arms. He carried me over to the back of the vehicle.

The cries of young children were everywhere. The army men slammed the doors and started the motor. My little patch of grass became faint, my ball of wool was all I had left. What felt like forever slowly went past. We reached the high gates guarding a huge pen like structure. Many barracks surrounded me. The hush voice of a man said, “Get out of the truck.” Quickly I stumble out, rushing over to a dirty, dry platform. Hundreds of children played together as that was all the company they had. I was scared, scared of what was going to happen from here on. My only hope being my mum would come and rescue me from this horrible place. I’ve just got to keep believing that my Mum will one day be there for me.

A Terrifying Encounter

The sun’s hot rays beamed down onto my damp forehead. The cool water splashed my feet as I sat on the golden sand scattered across the beach. The blue and green shades of water mingled together like people in a crowd. The white ripples from the water looked like puffy candy floss being swirled around in a bowl. Faint figures bobbed up and down in the water on their different coloured boogie boards. My soft wrinkly hands scooped up a pile of sand, then filtered the little golden grains through the gaps in my fingers. Dark grey clouds drew closer together. The beautiful blue sky was now turning grey. The gentle soft waves were becoming fierce and strong. The aqua coloured water started drawing backwards, farther and farther away out of sight. A line of fear crawled up my body. My legs felt like they were lifting off the ground as the wind whipped past my face. Rainbow coloured fish squirmed on the flat plane the ocean had left behind. My natural instant was to run, “Faster,” I kept telling myself. “Faster!” but I knew I couldn’t.

The thunderous roar of the sea grew louder every second. The unstable ground shook dramatically from side to side. I glanced quickly backwards to see what was happening. The raging waves power above my small body, taller than the buildings surrounding me. Screams rang in my ears, horrible thoughts ran through my head like a slideshow playing constantly. Hundreds of people ran towards the giant green hills in the horizon, that’s where I was heading too. I ran as fast as I could, but it wasn’t fast enough. The world felt like it was over. Different emotions swirled together. Delicate tears dropped down the side of my sweating face as I thought of my beloved family and friends. The water was catching me, creeping up to my feet. It felt like I had been running for hours when it had only been five minutes. I started slowing down, I couldn’t run for much longer, my legs were gradually getting heavier. The urge for fresh water was becoming unbearable, my moist mouth was drying up. Then all of a sudden the monstrous water thumped down on top of me. Struggling for air I swam to the top. The force of the water pushed me towards a tall cabbage tree, still surviving from the affects of the tsunami. With my last bit of strength I grabbed its long droopy tree leaves, and held on for my life. The high rise buildings now lay in crumbled heaps.

Time went by very slowly. I heard a faint sound in the distance. A dark little dot appeared not too far away. It came closer to me, I recognized that it was a helicopter. I lifted my sore arms upwards, waving rapidly trying to get their attention. A long thin ladder flopped down towards me. A muscular man climbed carefully downwards and attached a harness to my hips. The helicopter started lifting upwards with me dragging on below.

What once use to be a beautiful landscape was now turned upside down into an island of water.
